Lighthouse Club shines brighter than ever in first networking of 2011

The Lighthouse Club has seemingly perfected the idea of “networking with a difference” as more than 260 people turned out at the Holiday Inn’s Havana Bar for the first meeting of the year. Unlike the group’s early days, when staffers from companies attending would show up in uniform, women now turn out dressed to kill in dresses and high heels. The more-relaxed atmosphere sets LHC apart from other, more-traditional networking nights. Some of the 300-600 baht entrance fees went to the Melissa Cosgrove Children’s Foundation <www.mccf.uk.com>. The good cause made nearly three hours of meeting new people and drinking wine even more enjoyable. Sponsored this month by wealth-management firm Montpelier Group, the event went smoothly thanks to efforts from organizing committee members Cees Cuijpers, Mark Bowling and Tracy Cosgrove, as well as to Steve “Never Going Home” from Murphy’s Law and Kim Bokelund of Best Bakers, who had recently raised 50,000 baht at the Pattaya Bed Race for the Cosgrove foundation. Highlights of the meeting are online at PattayaMail.com. The next meeting will take place March 4 at the Drift lounge in the new Pattaya Hilton hotel. No reservations necessary.

11th February the next Great LHC event

The Latest Pattaya Lighthouse Club Charity Event
Please join us on the 11th of February for the latest Lighthouse Club Charity event in the Havana Bar at the Holiday Inn located on Pattaya Beach Road. More details at the end of the article. If you haven’t heard of the Lighthouse Club hear is a little history first.
So what is the Lighthouse Club?
The Club has its origins in Newcastle in England, where in 1956 a group of exhibitors got together at the Rex Hotel after a construction exhibition. A certain Eddie Ward decided it would be a good idea to form a club, which would meet regularly between exhibitions, to continue the goodwill and co-operation enjoyed during the exhibition. The club was named after Saint Mary’s Lighthouse clearly visible from the Rex Hotel. With this in mind a Benevolent Fund was formed in the early 1960s whose objective is to give financial help to the victims of accident and illness within the construction industry and to dependants after a fatal accident. Sadly, Eddie Ward died in 1993. Each year the Hong Kong Branch holds a dinner in honour of Eddie Ward, usually during July.
The Lighthouse Club chose as its motto the Latin expression “Aliis cum Humanitate”, which translates as “Consideration for Others”.
The Lighthouse Club has become its own legend. The Club has grown from a small clutch of members to envelope branches not only in the UK, but also in South East Asia, Europe and South Africa. In this region there are branches in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines.
And what about the Pattaya Lighthouse Club?
The Lighthouse Club branch Pattaya started a few years ago around 2007. All proceeds from the events go to the Melissa Cosgrove Children Foundation (MCCF) the LHC charity-cause. It consisted of network functions rotated between a few of the leading Irish bars in town: Shenanigans and Jameson’s The Irish Pub at Nova Park. The monthly gatherings focused on property-industry professionals and were quite successful at a glance. It was decided to interest a few new committee members to join and throw in some fresh ideas and efforts. The new committee was formed mid-2010 and a different selection of more attractive venues and a much more active marketing approach. This resulted quite effectively in corporate network gatherings with an almost ideal mix of business professionals active on the Eastern Seaboard with a growing interest of Bangkok based business owners.
Most of the LHC meetings at present attract an approximate number of 200-plus guests. What a great incentive for charity!
The LHC Pattaya events are now being regarded as one of the most prominent corporate network gatherings on the Eastern Seaboard of Thailand!
The Lighthouse Club Pattaya is ‘operated’ on a 100% voluntary bases by individuals that “make a living by what they get and make a life by what they give”
The Lighthouse Club is now leading on the Eastern Seaboard for the best quality charity-network events!
A little about The Melissa Cosgrove Children’s Foundation
The Melissa Cosgrove Children’s Foundation is a non charitable, not-for-profit organisation founded in 2003. It was set up primarily to provide education, shelter and care for children of migrant workers who live on large construction sites throughout Thailand. The Foundation works throughout Thailand bringing hope and happiness to disadvantaged children. Much of the work of The Melissa Cosgrove Children’s Foundation is based in the labour camps set up by developers to service their building projects. It is very difficult in the ‘civilised’ West to to realise the terrible conditions under which these people live. Large galvanised iron compounds are filled with 2 storey galvanised buildings which are then divided into sections. Each family is allocated one section. How big is a section?? – 2 metres x 2 metres, with no windows, no cooking facilities, communal toilets for over 2,000 people.
The Melissa Cosgrove Children’s Foundation team is working alongside the booming construction industry to continue giving hope and improving the lives of children living with their parents in the many squalid labour camps around the cities of Pattaya and Bangkok.
Most of these charity events are sponsored by these developers and associated companies.
We hope you have been inspired by the initiatives the Foundation is involved with at present and can identify with the need to help disadvantaged children in Thailand.
We want and need your help.  e-mail : travelswithmum@aol.co.uk  or Call Tracy : 08-47785476

The Movers and Shakers Event

An excellent article regarding The Movers and Shakers event held on the 3rd of December 2010 by Real Estate Magazine reporter David Buckley. The printed version of this article will appear in REM Magazine early in January.

Real Estate Magazine is an excellent source of information about real estate in Pattaya. Link to the Real Estate Magazine website.

There was one “wow” after another when this year’s Movers & Shakers (M&S) event was held early last month. But perhaps the biggest intake of breath came just a little later when the event sponsors were able to announce that more than Bt200,000 would be donated to charity.

The news was given by M&S organiser Cees Cuijpers, whose Town & Country Property company are one of the founding sponsors of the event along with JVK International Movers and this magazine, Rem.

Cees said: “I’m delighted to inform everyone linked with M&S that both the British Chamber of Commerce Thailand (BCCT) and AustCham (the Australian Chamber of Commerce) have decided to merge their share of the charity proceeds and give it to the Melissa Cosgrove Children Foundation (MCCF), the chosen charity of the Lighthouse Club Pattaya!

“This means MCCF will receive no less than Bt210,000 from the event! Now that is a great donation to charity! So many thanks to all involved!”

Tracy Cosgrove, the driving force and founder of MCCF, said: “This will start the new year off brilliantly. We have a new project in mind for 2011 which wouldn’t have been possible without this money. I’m sure the children in our care will be delighted. This donation can and will make a big difference to them.”

Special thanks must go to the three key sponsors – The Cliff by Nova Group condominium, the Siam Royal View housing development, and Kone, the elevators and escalators company. Their sizeable donations helped ensure that everyone had a good time, but with plenty held in reserve to benefit MCCF.

Yes, a big event was promised … and a big day and night was delivered. That was the view of everyone I spoke to during and after the event.

M&S is a combination of golf day followed by an evening net- working party.

At the risk of stretching journalistic licence you could say that the night had a thousand eyes (as Bobby Vee once sang) because it is estimated that more than 500 people attended the evening at the Centara Grand Mirage at Wong-Amat.

Earlier in the day the Texas Scramble golf tournament had been held at the Plutaluang Navy course at Sattahip

When guests for the evening event were gathered on the terrace outside the ballroom at the Centara Grand Mirage there was an air of uncertainty.

“Is this it?” some were starting to ask as the time ticked away. It wasn’t a criticism of the terrace area which was superbly presented and served by a stage on which lady violinists performed before moving among the guests while continuing to play.

No, it was just that, based on their experience the previous year, they had come to expect more. And more is exactly what they got!

At the appointed time Centara staff started to ring bells summoning guests into the ballroom area.

Witness reactions

Event organiser Cees Cuijpers, MD of Town & Country Property, couldn’t pass up the opportunity to stand near the entrance and witness some of the reactions.

“You should have seen the look on the faces of people,” he told me later. “It was great just to stand there and watch.”

What greeted the M&S guests was a giant ballroom with a big stage set in the middle. Two cocktail vans were there to dispense every kind of drink and Centara staff were on hand to give out the more conservative beer and wine.

There were food stations all over the area, with some serving delicious ham and beef off the bone.

“This food is excellent,” said one of my golf team members later in the evening while wolfing down what looked like his third helping of ham.

“I’m stuffed,” said another team member indicating that the food was so good he has over-indulged.

But plenty happened before they reached this stage.

Soon after the doors to the ballroom had been opened two dancers from Zico’s Brazilian Bar and Grill gave a high-tempo start to proceedings with their energetic dance routine.

Dance delight

These ladies had delighted Lighthouse Club members in Centara’s Zulu bar earlier in the year and they were excellent again. At one point they got as male member of the audience up to dance with them. He was so good I wondered if he was a dance pro himself.

Next on stage were ladies modeling swimwear collections. The fashion show was organised by Katalina Collections in association with Ariz Events Design. After the show the models were happy to pose with guests in what p[roved to be a long photo session.

On-stage proceedings were rounded off when DJ Ferris B took control of the music and he was joined by dancers from Walking Street’s Insomnia Club. Add in plenty of food, more than enough to drink, lots of good company and fun in no short measure and you can understand why many were talking about it for days afterwards.

And the good news is that Cees has already started talking about M&S 2011. He’s certainly created a tough act to follow but I know he will do his utmost to create something fresh and exciting.

Close to 100 golfers lined up for the “shotgun” start on the North and West courses at the Plutaluang Navy facility at Sattahip as part of the Movers & Shakers charity event.

Small changes were made to the format compared to last year to give every team an even better chance to compete. This time handicap allowances were taken into account and each player had to contribute at least three drives in the Texas Scramble format. Several players had to wait until their 17th hole before getting their final drive to count which made for some tense moments, especially among the high handicappers. But it was a team of high handicappers who eventually emerged victorious. They were from the Bangkok-Pattaya Hospital. In second place was the quartet from developers Tudor Court and third were the Bunker Boyz.

The winning teams received their prizes at the Centara Grand Mirage along with individuals who collected technical prizes for shots, such as longest drive, closest to the flag and the like.

Brilliant year ends on a high note

Lighthouse Club rounded off the year in style when it held it’s first Christmas gala dinner at the Centara Grand Mirage in mid-December. It was yet another success in a year of successes.

Earlier in the year it was feared that LHC Pattaya was running out of stealth – same faces, same venues, poor attendance numbers. LHC was raising just about enough to be able to continue to support the Melissa Cosgrove Childrens Foundation.

Then several new faces came on board and decided a shakeup was needed, new venues such as The Centara Grand Mirage, new ways to attract interest such as auctions. Brazilian dancers, live music, you name it, were introduced.

On Friday 29th of October 2010, Lighthouse Club (LHC) Pattaya enjoyed another great corporate network event!

One of the best functions so far, hosted at the Thai Garden Resort on North Pattaya Road.

Over 200 guests attended the evening enjoying a nice ‘cool winter breeze’ and an excellent variety of great food and drinks.
The set-up around the pool of the TGR was impressive and the after-party at the Moon River Pub was simply great with the live-music tunes of the Power Jam Band!
